As you’re reading this, I’m probably on my way back from the beautiful beach in Gulf Shores. But I still wanted to do a quick post on what I’ve been up to with my goal of doing creative things just for fun.  If you follow me on Instagram you’ve been seeing the fun I’ve been up to making pretty things (and my new endevour of making my photos more stylistic and pretty), but I thought I’d do a re-cap on here for those of you who don’t (and let’s be honest…it’s because I really love looking at these pictures over and over again.  If that’s wrong, I don’t wanna be right!)

Gettin' Creative Making Pretty Things by Ruby & Sass // Making DIY Tissue Tassels, Homemade Reeses Cups, Redesigning Resumes & more fun stuff!

1] SKETCHES: To be fair, this one isn’t creative just for creative’s sake.  This was actually some preliminary sketches for a client logo I’m working on. BUT do you see that pencil? That’s what I call fun (and cute, adorable and totally sketch worthy) Thank you Target Dollar Section, you’re the best (actually no, you’re a big, big problem. I just can’t quit you)!

2] PRETTY KRAFT PAPER WRAPPING: Kevin’s birthday is at the end of March.  Now, normally I’m really good at keeping presents a secret- usually to the point that he gets upset (because he’s SO not a secret keeper). But I ordered this awesome shirt for him from Stately Type and COULD NOT WAIT to give it to him.  So, about 15 minutes before he got home from work I wrapped his gift up and made it pretty so I could give to him that day.  PS- Tell me I’m not the only one that still loves kraft paper and baker’s twine (and washi tape and ribbons?).

3] HOMEMADE REESES EGGS:  A few days after Kevin’s early birthday present, he was leaving me to take his students on a trip to the Smokey Mountain.  A 10-ish hour bus ride called for some surprise treats. He LOVES Reeses and I found this recipe for making Homemade Reeses Eggs (though, I did mine in balls instead of using a cookie cutter.  Ain’t nobody got time for that!) and a cute little $1 card from Target. I’m told they were the highlight of the trip!  Well, I guess if you don’t count mountains, fresh air and the lovely view that is (which, you know, I’m not).

4] REDESIGNED RESUME:  Sooo, I guess this is where I should confess that at least half of these include my husband.  But, what can I say? I kinda like the guy. Anyway, my super awesome husband is pretty much the best teacher I know and he needed his resumé spruced up. This is also where I admit I’m a nerd and was excited to redo the layout & typefaces to make all his accomplishments shine.  I’ve since redone my brother’s for him too.  It’s surprisingly satisfying.  And while I’m sure many people wouldn’t consider creating a resumé to be creative or really much fun, I totally do!

5] ORGANIZED PANTRY:  This is probably the one that I stare at the most- the picture and in person. IT’S JUST SO PRETTY! I’ve always wanted pretty glass jars to store my baking ingredients right out on the counter top. To me, it was kind of a sign of having a “grown up” kitchen. You know, big pretty granite counter tops with a delightful display of sugar, flour, brown sugar..etc. (If you didn’t think I was a nerd from #4, you do now, right?).  Sigh. Just beautiful.  We totally don’t have the extra counter space though. But a while ago I thought, “why does it matter if I don’t have counter space, I can still put the pretty glass in our pantry, right?” Um, YES. Yes, I can.  And I did. I bought these pretty cracker jars and used some chalkboard tags and a chalk pen to label each one. Then tied them on with a couple rounds of baker’s twine.  I smile every time I look at them. Every single time.

6] DIY TISSUE TASSELS:  I absolutely LOVE this Tissue Tassel DIY. I saw that Shop Sweet Lulu has these in their office and thought they were just so pretty. I found a tutorial to make them and it’s not too hard.  A little time consuming (and a lot of cutting) but they turned out so well, I’m planning to make more! Plus another one of my goals is learning to use and Exacto Knife better and I sure got a lot of practice with these :)  Planning to use them to style some photos of my Art Prints for my Etsy Shop (another goal!). The tutorial I used can be found here. And the Alison Show also has a fun DIY Tassel made out of tablecloths you should check out.

So, that’s what I’ve been up to the past couple weeks! Anyone else trying to be more creative just for fun? What sort of projects are you up to?
