Before I continue with my Logo Girl series (in which I want to dive further into fonts and what they mean), I wanted to do a quick overview of typography basics- font types. I know these overviews are all over the internet, but I wanted do my own version before I dove deeper :)

All fonts can be grouped into 3 categories: Serif, San-Serif  and Display fonts (all those fun ones- handwritten, cursive, decorative…etc). You can see the brief (but pretty!) examples below:

Typography Basics- How to Choose a Font
Some important things to note about choosing fonts:

– I know free fonts are all the rage, but they are not all good (or good for commercial use)! Pay attention to licenses and how fonts are displaying on your screen. If they look unintentionally strange, don’t use them!

– I love FontSquirrel for free fonts and am completely addicted to MyFonts for paid fonts.

-Display Fonts should never be used for Body Text, they are best kept to short sentences, headlines or something you want to really stand out.

-When picking fonts for your brand or project- pick 2-3 fonts and use only them. Picking more than 3 usually comes across as too messy and cluttered.

-Take advantage of fonts with different weights (i.e. light, regular, bold, black, italic)- those are a great way to achieve a distinctive and orginal look without adding extra fonts.

– Don’t match fonts that look too similar, it will look as if you’ve unintentionally used the wrong font.

If all this info is new to you, check out my friend Jess’ post on the Beginner’s Guide to Typography HERE.

How I hope you’re excited, fonts are SO MUCH FUN.
In my incredibly-unbiased-pro-designer-opinion.

Do you love fonts as much as I do? Or do you have trouble deciding which ones to use?
